Cooktop Repair in Tampa, FL Every Zone Working Properly

A cooktop has three completely different technologies behind the same countertop cutout, and each fails in its own way. Radiant glass burns out switches and cracks, induction kills its own electronics with heat, and gas loses ignition. What can be repaired depends entirely on which one is in the counter.

Radiant glass: the switch, the element, the glass

Under a smooth ceramic top each element is fed by an infinite switch that cycles power on and off to produce what the dial calls medium. Those switches wear out contact by contact, so the classic symptom is an element stuck on full or dead at every setting except high. Elements themselves fail open and simply stop. Neither is expensive. The glass is the different case: a crack, a chip through the surface or an impact star means the top is replaced rather than repaired, because the surface is both the cooking vessel support and the electrical isolation. On many models the glass costs enough that a whole new unit competes with it, and a customer deserves that comparison before ordering. The rest of the appliance categories are on the services index.

Induction fails as electronics, not as heating

An induction hob generates a magnetic field in a coil under the glass and puts the heat into the pan itself. There is no element to burn out, so the failures are the coil, its driver board, the temperature sensors that protect the electronics, and above all the cooling fan. Boards under a glass top live in a warm cabinet, and once the fan or its air path clogs, the unit begins shutting a zone down partway through cooking and posting an over-temperature code. A zone that works alone but drops out when three others are running is almost always a thermal-protection event and not a failed coil. The other classic induction complaint is not a fault at all: a pan with too little ferrous content, which the hob refuses to recognize.

Gas cooktops answer to the fuel code

On a gas top the repairs are ignition and gas flow: a cracked spark electrode, a wet or fouled igniter, a failed spark module, a clogged burner port, or an orifice sized for the wrong fuel after a propane conversion. What the connection looks like is not the technician's preference, it is code. Florida's residential code lists the permitted connection methods in section G2422.1, including a listed and labeled appliance connector complying with ANSI Z21.24 or CSA 6.10 that is located entirely in the same room as the appliance, and section G2422.1.2.1 caps a connector's overall length at 6 feet. Connectors also have to be installed so they are protected against physical damage. Any repair that moves the gas line rather than the appliance belongs on the gas range page with the permit question answered in writing.

The hood above it is part of the diagnosis

Cooktops installed in island counters and in remodeled older kitchens frequently end up under a hood that either recirculates or is oversized for the house. The model residential code section on makeup air, M1503.6, requires an exhaust system capable of moving more than 400 cubic feet per minute to be provided with makeup air at approximately the exhaust rate, with a damper, wherever fuel-burning appliances that are not direct vent sit inside the same air barrier. That matters at the cooktop because a strong hood without makeup air pulls combustion products the wrong way through other vented appliances and produces lazy yellow flames that get blamed on the burners. If the complaint is smoke, grease film or a hood that runs loud and moves nothing, the work is range hood repair rather than cooktop repair.

Humidity and the control area

Downdraft units and cooktops mounted over dishwashers or in island cabinets sit in the wettest air in the house, and this is a city with a great deal of it. Corrosion at the spark electrode tips, at the switch terminals under a radiant top, and at ribbon cable connectors on an induction board all show up as intermittent behavior first: a burner that lights on the third try, a zone that works when cold, a display that flickers. Intermittent faults are worth chasing with a meter rather than answering with a board, because a cleaned and re-terminated connection is a repair and a control board on a guess is a return visit.

What the visit covers

A technician identifies the technology and the model, measures each zone or burner for the fault reported, tests the switches or the driver board rather than assuming, checks the glass for cracks and the seal at the counter for water intrusion, verifies the cooling path on an induction unit, and on gas checks ignition, flame quality, orifice size and the connector installation. Switches, igniters, electrodes, sensors and fans are ordinary repairs. Glass tops, coil assemblies and induction generator boards are the parts that push a decision toward replacement, and the price of both paths belongs on the same page of the estimate. If the oven under the counter is also affected, see oven and range repair.

Storm outages set the appliance repair calendar

Florida Public Service Commission outage reporting at 5:44 p.m. on October 11, 2024 recorded 484,194 of Hillsborough County's 701,412 electric accounts without power during Hurricane Milton, 69.03 percent of the county.

Why it matters: Wide outages start the food-safety clock on every refrigerator and freezer at once, and the repeated switching and voltage sags during restoration are what kill inverter boards and start relays days later.

Older districts mean retrofitted appliance connections

City of Tampa records give the Hyde Park local historic district a period of significance of 1886 to 1933 across roughly 367 acres and 1,223 buildings, and the Seminole Heights district 1912 to 1939 across roughly 215 acres and 703 buildings.

Why it matters: Laundry hookups, gas lines, kitchen exhaust ducts and dryer vents in that housing stock were all retrofitted long after construction, which is where undersized circuits and improvised duct runs come from.

Tampa permits separate appliance work from trade work

The City of Tampa trade permit limitation list updated 11/14/2025 assigns residential gas piping excluding tanks to a plumbing trade permit and electrical rewiring, panel, meter can and riser replacement to an electrical trade permit, with anything beyond the listed limits requiring a building permit and plan review.

Why it matters: It draws the line between an appliance repair and permitted trade work, so a quote can state plainly which side of that line a gas connection or a new laundry circuit falls on.
