On a gas range the appliance and the fuel line are two separate jobs with two separate rule sets. Ignition, burner and oven faults are ordinary repairs. Anything that alters the piping is permitted work in Tampa, and the difference belongs on the estimate.

Six boxes, about thirty seconds. You pick when to be called back, and that is when the phone rings.
Or call (813) 722-1409A surface burner that clicks without lighting has spark but no fuel at the port, or spark jumping to the wrong place: a wet or cracked electrode, a food-fouled port, or a burner cap seated crooked. A burner that neither clicks nor lights points at the spark module or the switch under that knob. In the oven, a glow-bar igniter draws current to open the gas valve, and as it ages it still glows while drawing too little current to open the valve, so the oven preheats forever and never lights. That specific failure mode is why an igniter is measured under load rather than judged by whether it glows. A sealed oven that lights with a bang has delayed ignition, which is a service item now, not next month. The other appliance categories are on the services index.
A properly adjusted burner on natural gas burns mostly blue. Lazy yellow tips, soot on the pan bottoms, or a persistent gas smell during cooking indicate air and fuel are out of balance: an orifice sized for propane on a natural gas supply after a move or a conversion, a blocked air shutter, or a low supply pressure. In houses with a strong kitchen hood the same symptoms appear for a different reason. The model residential code makeup air provision, section M1503.6, requires exhaust capable of more than 400 cubic feet per minute to be given makeup air at approximately the same rate where fuel-burning appliances that are not direct vent sit inside the dwelling's air barrier, because otherwise the exhaust depressurizes the room the burners are breathing from. Testing that means running the hood at full speed and watching the flames.
Florida's residential code lists the permitted ways to connect an appliance to gas piping in section G2422.1: rigid metallic pipe and fittings, corrugated stainless steel tubing installed per its manufacturer's instructions, or a listed and labeled appliance connector complying with ANSI Z21.24 or CSA 6.10, installed per its instructions and located entirely in the same room as the appliance. Section G2422.1.2.1 limits a connector's overall length to 6 feet measured along its centerline, and G2422.1.1 requires connectors and tubing to be installed so they are protected against physical damage. Where the house has corrugated stainless steel tubing without a listed arc-resistant jacket, section G2411.2 requires the piping system to be electrically continuous and bonded to the electrical service grounding electrode system, with a jumper not smaller than 6 AWG copper and a length not exceeding 75 feet. None of that is optional, and none of it is something to discover during a range swap.
The City of Tampa's building code exempts a short list of gas work from permits: a portable heating appliance, and replacement of a minor part that neither alters the approval of the equipment nor makes it unsafe. The same code withholds the minor-repair allowance from anything that adds to, alters, replaces or relocates gas, waste, vent or similar piping. On the other side, the city's own trade permit limitation list, updated 11/14/2025, puts residential gas piping excluding tanks under a plumbing trade permit that does not require plan review. So replacing a burner valve or an igniter is appliance work, while moving the shutoff, replacing the flex connector run, or piping a range into a kitchen that never had gas is permitted work. Ask which side of that line a quote sits on before anyone starts.
Hyde Park's local historic district covers roughly 367 acres and 1,223 buildings with a period of significance from 1886 to 1933, and kitchens in that stock have been reconfigured many times over. Two things recur. Ranges get moved between houses and between fuels, so a unit running on the wrong orifice set is common enough to check first when every burner is yellow. And a connector installed years ago runs behind the range where it has been kinked by the appliance being slid in and out. A connector with a sharp bend, a paint coating, or a splice is replaced, not reused, and the length limit above is the reason a longer one cannot simply be added.
A technician verifies gas is present and the shutoff is accessible, tests the spark module and each electrode, measures the oven igniter under load, checks the safety valve, inspects burner ports, caps and air shutters, confirms flame quality on every burner with the hood running, checks the connector for length, routing and damage, and leak-tests every joint disturbed. Igniters, electrodes, spark modules, valves and thermostats are ordinary parts-and-labor repairs. A cracked manifold, a failed safety valve on an old cabinet, or a range needing a full fuel conversion are the findings that make replacement the cheaper path. If the cooking surface alone is the fault, price cooktop repair; if the cavity is the problem, see oven and range repair.

Call (813) 722-1409The City of Tampa trade permit limitation list updated 11/14/2025 assigns residential gas piping excluding tanks to a plumbing trade permit and electrical rewiring, panel, meter can and riser replacement to an electrical trade permit, with anything beyond the listed limits requiring a building permit and plan review.
Why it matters: It draws the line between an appliance repair and permitted trade work, so a quote can state plainly which side of that line a gas connection or a new laundry circuit falls on.

NOAA engineering weather data for Tampa records 5,093 annual hours meeting its humid-area criterion of wet-bulb temperature above 67°F.
Why it matters: Long humid periods make marginal refrigerator door seals, condensation control, and dryer exhaust performance show up quickly during an appliance inspection.

The City of Tampa reported average finished-water hardness of 211 mg/L, or 12.3 grains per gallon, in its 2025 water quality report.
Why it matters: Mineral scale can affect dishwasher spray paths, filters, valve screens, and water-heating components. A technician checks the water side of the appliance before blaming the machine alone.
