An oven that will not reach temperature and an oven that overshoots are opposite faults with the same complaint attached. One is a dead heating element or a failed igniter; the other is a sensor reading low and a control obeying it. The measurement decides which part gets bought.

Six boxes, about thirty seconds. You pick when to be called back, and that is when the phone rings.
Or call (813) 722-1409A range is several appliances sharing one cabinet, and the first job is deciding how many of them are broken. If the surface elements or the top burners work while the oven stays cold, the fault is downstream of the control on the oven circuit only. If the oven bakes but will not broil, the second element or the second igniter circuit is open. If nothing on an electric range heats but the clock and lights are alive, the machine is running on one leg of its 240-volt supply and the problem is at the breaker or the feeder, not inside the appliance. Sorting that out at the start is what keeps a fifty-dollar element from being quoted as a control board. The other appliance categories these tests rule out are listed on the services index.
Modern ovens hold temperature with a resistance probe mounted through the rear wall. Its resistance climbs as the cavity heats, and the control converts that reading into a setpoint decision. When the probe drifts, the control faithfully heats to the wrong number, so a cake burns at 350 while the display insists nothing is wrong. The honest diagnosis compares a thermometer in the cavity against the display through a full preheat and a full cycle, then measures the probe at room temperature and hot. A control board replaced without that comparison has a good chance of coming back, because the board was reporting what it was told.
Pyrolytic cleaning drives the cavity far above cooking temperature with the door locked, and it is the single hardest thing the appliance ever does. The heat routinely takes out the door latch motor, the thermal cutout, the cooling fan and, on some designs, the control board that sits directly above the cavity. A range that died during or right after a clean cycle should be diagnosed in that order rather than as a random control failure. If time allows before an event, the safer path is a manual clean and a working oven instead of a locked door and a dead board.
Free-standing ranges tip forward when weight lands on an open door, and the anti-tip bracket that prevents it has been required since 1991. The Consumer Product Safety Commission states that from 1980 through 2008 its staff was aware of 38 fatalities associated with range tipovers, twenty of them, or 53 percent, involving children aged one to five, along with 84 injuries recorded from 1980 through 2006, most of them burns from hot liquid spilling out of pans as the range tilted. Additional marking and installation requirements took effect on February 18, 2012. Any visit that pulls a range out to work on it should end with that bracket engaged again, and a range that has never had one gets one.
The Hyde Park local historic district covers roughly 367 acres and 1,223 buildings with a period of significance running from 1886 to 1933, listed on the National Register in 1985 and designated locally in 1988. Kitchens in that stock have been rebuilt repeatedly, and a modern range frequently lands on a circuit that was sized for something smaller. A scorched receptacle, a warm cord, or a breaker that trips only during preheat is a supply problem wearing an appliance costume. That distinction also decides who does the work: the City of Tampa's own trade permit list puts electrical rewiring and panel, meter can and riser replacement under an electrical trade permit, so a range that needs its circuit corrected needs a permitted electrician rather than an appliance part.
Expect a check of every element and burner in turn, a resistance reading on the oven probe, a comparison of actual cavity temperature against the display, a look at the door hinges, gasket and latch, and continuity checks on the thermal cutouts before any board is suspected. Elements, igniters, probes, switches and latches are ordinary parts-and-labor repairs. A cracked glass cooktop on a slide-in, a failed dual control assembly, and a cabinet with rusted-through insulation are the three findings that usually move the conversation toward replacement. If the surface is the only broken part, price cooktop repair separately, and if the fuel side is the fault, gas work has its own rules on the gas range page.

Call (813) 722-1409City of Tampa records give the Hyde Park local historic district a period of significance of 1886 to 1933 across roughly 367 acres and 1,223 buildings, and the Seminole Heights district 1912 to 1939 across roughly 215 acres and 703 buildings.
Why it matters: Laundry hookups, gas lines, kitchen exhaust ducts and dryer vents in that housing stock were all retrofitted long after construction, which is where undersized circuits and improvised duct runs come from.

The City of Tampa trade permit limitation list updated 11/14/2025 assigns residential gas piping excluding tanks to a plumbing trade permit and electrical rewiring, panel, meter can and riser replacement to an electrical trade permit, with anything beyond the listed limits requiring a building permit and plan review.
Why it matters: It draws the line between an appliance repair and permitted trade work, so a quote can state plainly which side of that line a gas connection or a new laundry circuit falls on.

NOAA engineering weather data for Tampa records 5,093 annual hours meeting its humid-area criterion of wet-bulb temperature above 67°F.
Why it matters: Long humid periods make marginal refrigerator door seals, condensation control, and dryer exhaust performance show up quickly during an appliance inspection.
