A warm refrigerator is really two repairs wearing one symptom. Either a control, a fan or a defrost part quit, or the sealed system lost its charge. Which one it is decides the price, the certification required, and whether someone else owes the bill.

Six boxes, about thirty seconds. You pick when to be called back, and that is when the phone rings.
Or call (813) 722-1409A freezer that is still hard-frozen while the fresh food section climbs points at air movement rather than at refrigeration. On most current designs the evaporator sits behind the freezer's rear wall, and a fan, a damper, a thermistor or a stalled defrost cycle can leave that coil making cold that never reaches the upper cabinet. When both sections drift up together the list changes: condenser fan, start relay or inverter, main control board, or the sealed system.
A slab of frost across the back freezer panel is evidence about the defrost circuit, and it should be photographed rather than chipped. An ice pick through an aluminum evaporator turns a heater-and-thermostat job into a scrap decision, because the coil is not a repairable part in a household box.
The sealed system means the compressor, the condenser, the evaporator, the metering device and the refrigerant charge inside them. When that is the fault, the machine usually runs without stopping and cools weakly, or frost forms on only the first few inches of the evaporator inlet, or nothing gets cold while the compressor stays warm to the hand. Control problems tend to be intermittent instead: they follow a defrost interval, they clear after a power cycle, they leave a stored fault code.
That distinction also decides who is allowed to touch the machine. Under EPA rules for Clean Air Act Section 608, a technician is anyone attaching or detaching hoses and gauges to measure pressure, adding or removing refrigerant, or otherwise violating the integrity of a small appliance, and that person must hold a certification. Type I is the small appliance credential. It does not expire, and apprentices are exempt only while closely and continually supervised.
Start with the manufacturer's written warranty that came in the box. Federal law shapes what it must say, because the FTC's disclosure and pre-sale availability rules reach every written warranty on a consumer product costing more than fifteen dollars. Under the pre-sale rule a retailer has to let you read the terms before you buy, not after the box is open.
Next comes the extended service warranty, and in this state that is not a handshake. Section 634.401(13) defines a service warranty as a written promise of at least a year to repair, replace or maintain a consumer product, or to indemnify you for that work, including failure from normal wear and tear or a power surge. Section 634.403 then says nobody may provide or offer to provide service warranties to residents here without a subsisting license from the Office of Insurance Regulation. The license fee is $200 for each license year, and selling without one is a first-degree misdemeanor.
Third comes the home warranty, a separate animal under part II of the same chapter. Section 634.301 defines it as covering a structural component or appliance of a home, and it lists the roof, plumbing, electrical, foundation, basement, walls, ceilings and floors as the structural side.
This is the rule almost nobody knows. The FTC's guidance to warrantors is blunt: tie-in sales provisions generally are not allowed, meaning a warranty may not state or imply that you must buy or use an item or service from a particular company to keep coverage alive. The narrow exceptions are items or services the warrantor supplies at no charge under the warranty, or a waiver granted by the Commission.
What a warrantor may still do is refuse to pay for damage that somebody else's parts or work caused. So an independent repair does not void the coverage by itself, but a bad independent repair can carve a hole in it. Keep the invoice and the part number.
Second refrigerators here live in garages, utility rooms and covered lanais, and that is the worst duty cycle in the house. NOAA engineering weather data for Tampa record 5,093 hours a year at a wet-bulb temperature above 67 degrees, the threshold that marks a humid design climate. A condenser rejecting heat into that air runs longer, and a door gasket that is marginal shows condensation and frost within a season.
Near the water, in Davis Islands or Ballast Point, salt-laden air adds corrosion at exposed terminals, fan motor housings and the condenser fins themselves. Check the manufacturer's ambient rating before assuming a garage installation was ever within specification.
The expensive mistake is a control board sold on a symptom rather than on a measurement. Frost that returns three weeks later usually means the defrost heater, the defrost thermostat or a thermistor was the real fault and the board simply carried the blame. Ask for the measured compartment temperatures, the frost pattern and the resistance readings that pointed at the part.
Expect a temperature check in both compartments, a look at the evaporator and its frost pattern, condenser and fan condition, a check of the door seals and the defrost circuit, then electrical testing of the start components before the sealed system is ever suspected. The price shape follows that order, because parts-and-labor repairs on fans, heaters, thermistors and boards sit well below sealed system work, which roughly doubles the figure once recovery and recharge are involved. DOE's rulemaking analysis puts the mean lifetime of a standard-size refrigerator or refrigerator-freezer at 14.3 years, so a sealed system quote on a machine near that age deserves a replacement comparison rather than an automatic yes.

Why it matters: Long humid periods make marginal refrigerator door seals, condensation control, and dryer exhaust performance show up quickly during an appliance inspection.

The City of Tampa reported average finished-water hardness of 211 mg/L, or 12.3 grains per gallon, in its 2025 water quality report.
Why it matters: Mineral scale can affect dishwasher spray paths, filters, valve screens, and water-heating components. A technician checks the water side of the appliance before blaming the machine alone.

Tampa’s 2022 housing data counted 77,745 renter-occupied homes, 49.5% of occupied units, and 70,201 apartment units, 40.58% of all units.
Why it matters: Appliance work often requires coordination with a property manager or association and access through compact utility closets, elevators, gates, or building water-shutoff procedures.
